Shawn Kemp blames Sonics’ ’96 Finals loss on Rodman, not MJ

Former NBA star Shawn Kemp has revealed a surprising perspective on the 1996 NBA Finals loss to Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls. In a recent interview on the popular podcast All The Smoke, hosted by Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, Kemp discussed the key factors that led to the Seattle SuperSonics’ defeat and pointed to Dennis Rodman, not Jordan, as the real reason behind their downfall.

Reflecting on the series, Kemp, a three-time All-NBA forward, acknowledged Michael Jordan’s brilliance but emphasized that it was Rodman’s defensive prowess and relentless rebounding that disrupted the Sonics’ rhythm. “Everyone talks about MJ, and of course, he was phenomenal. But it was Rodman’s defensive play and his ability to control the boards that really threw us off,” Kemp said.

During the six-game series, the Bulls managed to clinch the championship with Rodman’s aggressive defense and rebounding standing out as a decisive factor. Rodman grabbed 11 offensive rebounds in Game 2 and consistently outmaneuvered Seattle’s big men, including Kemp.

Kemp praised Rodman’s impact, highlighting how his tenacity on defense and knack for getting under opponents’ skin made him a game-changer. “Rodman was everywhere on the court, and his energy was infectious. He did the dirty work that doesn’t always show up on the stat sheet but makes a huge difference in the game,” Kemp added.

This revelation offers a fresh perspective on the series, often remembered for Jordan’s dominance. Kemp’s comments underscore the importance of Rodman’s role in the Bulls’ success and provide new insight into one of the most iconic matchups in NBA Finals history.
