Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Shows Restored Following Sexual Assault Scandal

big ralph | March 17, 2019

According to new reports, Neil deGrasse Tyson will return to his usual post as the host of his StarTalk and Cosmos: Possible Worlds shows following the completion of the National Geographic Channel's investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct brought up against the astrophysicist.

While the channel did not elaborate on its findings, it did announce that Tyson will be returning to host the remaining 13 episodes of StarTalk in April. "Both Fox and National Geographic are committed to finding an air date for Cosmos,” the network said in a statement. “There will be no further comment.”

The shows were put on ice when multiple women came forward with accounts of sexual abuse suffered at the hands of Tyson. Nat Geo made a commitment to investigating the claims, pushing back the March release of Cosmos on Fox and Nat Geo.

It was website Patheos that published a report in which two women accused Tyson of inappropriate behavior, including Dr. Katelyn N. Allers of Bucknell University and Ashley Watson, Tyson's former assistant. In the past musician Tchiya Amet also accused Tyson of raping her when they were graduate students in the 80s.

Fox and Nat Geo released a joint statement soon after: “We have only just become aware of the recent allegations regarding Neil deGrasse Tyson. We take these matters very seriously and we are reviewing the recent reports.”

It isn't the first time that Nat Geo has had to investigate one of its show's stars. Last year, they investigated allegations of sexual harassment brought on against Morgan Freeman by eight women. The network said it did not find any instances of wrongdoing, reinstating Freeman's The Story Of God production.
